ISO 45001:2018 is a global occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) standard. It was published in 2018 and establishes requirements for any organization that wishes to establish, implement, and maintain an OHSMS to improve OH&S, eliminate hazards and minimize risks, take advantage of improvement opportunities and address OH&S management system non-conformities associated with its activities. This new international standard focuses on an interrelated-process approach to identify and manage the system’s interactions. ISO 45001 supersedes OHSAS 18001. Companies who currently comply with OHSAS 18001 have three years (until March 2021) to migrate to the new ISO 45001 standard.
Why should I be interested?
The expected benefits of ISO 45001 implementation include reducing work-related injuries and illnesses, identifying and eliminating risks and hazards, improving OH&S performance, establishing an OHSMS, demonstrating top management commitment, and motivating and engaging workers through consultation and participation. If you are a contractor or supplier to a company that is certified to ISO 45001 there is a good chance you will be required to establish and implement an ISO 45001 for your company. Plus, it makes good business sense.
When does it take effect?
ISO 45001 was published in March 2018 and is in effect now.
How can I learn more?
