TN managing economic development UT CIS


The Tennessee Managing Economic Development Course focuses on building an effective economic development organization, as well as building interpersonal skills to better address economic development challenges and opportunities. Topics include measuring performance, communications strategies, leadership skills, navigating the political landscape, roles of key leaders and the generational divide.

The class is one of a series of economic development courses, provided by the University of Tennessee Center for Industrial Services (UTCIS), designed to share best practices and trends with Tennessee’s economic development practitioners, private industry leaders, community leaders, and elected officials.

Early Registration: $345   |   Regular Registration: $395 after November 9

The registration fee covers course materials, instruction, selected meals and refreshment breaks. It does not cover hotel and other travel expenses. Registration is limited to 35 participants and is filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Course Times:

  • On-site check-in: 9:30 AM
  • Day 1:  Course begins at 10:00 a.m. and ends 5:00 PM
  • Lunch:  12 PM
  • Day 2:  Course begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 12:00 PM

Cancellation and Refund Policy:

Payment needs to reach our office two weeks prior to the class. No refunds or credits will be issued for cancellations one week or less prior to the first date of class, but credit may be applied towards another UT CIS course.

A limited number of scholarships are available to course participants from Tennessee. Applications for scholarships can be downloaded here Scholarship Application.

Scholarships cover $270 of the $345 course tuition cost, and do not include hotel, travel or meals. Scholarship recipients will be required to pay $75 of the tuition cost, which will not be refundable should the participant withdraw from the course. Applications must be received by November 5, 2018 to be considered for a scholarship.

Dress Code:

The attire for the course is business casual.

Dr. Dave Kolzow has over thirty-eight years of consulting experience in site selection, real estate development planning, and community economic development. His past clients include numerous communities, states, and some of the largest land developers in the nation. His wide-ranging experience has also made him popular as a speaker and trainer. He served on the faculty of the Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma from 1985 to 2000, and recently has been the lead instructor for several IEDC courses. 

Dr. Kolzow has served on the faculty of Basic Economic Development Courses in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Georgia, Arizona, New Mexico, Michigan, Kentucky, California, and North Carolina.
