Environmental and Safety Hazard Assessment

Client Profile
Luxottica (Cole Vision) is a world leader in prescription frame design, lens manufacture, and prescription eyeglass distribution. Its distribution network covers all of the world’s key markets both wholesale and retail. The company operates three plants in Tennessee and a total of five nationally. In the Knoxville facility, there are two locations with employment at about 400. The company machines plastic lenses for eyeglasses and assembles eyeglasses at the rate of over 2500 pairs per day. The operation is a state of art, one-piece flow with every pair of eyeglasses manufactured specifically to order and then individually packaged in the shipping department which operates at 100% accuracy for delivering the product as ordered to the client; i.e. 2500 shipments per day. Some state of art tool identification and placement at the line is incorporated with a bar coded one piece manufacturing flow process where adjustments are directly input into the machines and every part produced is likely different from the past but no change over is required.

Situation
Both Knoxville facilities have been ISO 9001 Certified for seven years and have constantly been developing and enhancing their Quality and Environmental Management systems. Luxottica requested that TMEP perform an environmental compliance and safety inspection as a benchmark in their effort to make their operation compliant with all applicable laws and regulations. The Engineering manger requested that TMEP include in the study what requirements to make their facilities a “benchmark for other operations – both internally and externally”. .

Solution
An internal TMEP environmental consultant performed an environmental and safety assessment for both locations in Knoxville. The report found that the company is dedicated to providing their associates a safe and comfortable work environment as well as protecting the environment for current and future generations. Every effort is made to convert their raw materials into finished products for the customers or to capture the materials for reuse internally or recycling. It is the goal of the company to recycle everything possible and reduce and or eliminate solid waste disposal and this is demonstrated through various internal programs. The report recommended several minor changes to various environmental management systems.

Results
The Engineering Manager attributed the following economic impacts as a result:

  • $2,800,000 in retained sales
  • $780,000 in cost avoidance

Testimonial
“The TMEP conducted a thorough EH&S survey of our facilities and provided a detailed report of both findings and recommendations. The identification and implementation of these recommendations has improved our awareness of EH&S concerns and improved our level of compliance. Our position in the industry has been strengthened by a recent acquisition that I believe is due in part to the EH&S efforts facilitated and supported by the TMEP”.
